So far considered premium features worthy of only expensive high-end mobile devices, water and dust protection make their Western debut on an entry-level, hopefully budget-sensible Android – Sony’s Xperia M2 Aqua.
Given Sony was the one to push waterproofing into the mainstream mobile décor in the first place, it feels right for the Japanese to get to inaugurate low-end swimmers. Not that the just-unveiled M2 Aqua is a pushover.
It runs Android 4.4 KitKat out the box, so it’s perfectly up to date software-wise, it’s comfortably large, at 4.8 inches, it sports a nifty design, with a dedicated side camera button and slender 8.6 mm profile, and it’s quad-core, powered by a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 chip.
The 2,330 mAh battery ain’t half bad either, and Sony actually rates it at an impressive 11 hours and change in continuous talk time use. Then you have 4G LTE connectivity, and a solid 8 MP rear-facing camera with LED flash, auto focus, 1,080p video recording, HDR, SteadyShot stabilization, 4x digital zoom and a bunch of other add-ons and special optimizations.
Of course, none of that comes close to the “premiumness” of the water and dust protective functions, which get this, surpass even Xperia Z2’s certifications. While the spearhead is IP58 approved, the M2 Aqua offers the highest waterproof rating in a smartphone, high-end, mid-range or low-end, IP65/68, meaning it’s completely locked against dust and can withstand long, deep swims.
All things considered therefore, you shouldn’t be too pissed the display boasts sub-par 960 x 540 pixels resolution, and there’s only 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage to go around, as cranking up those specs would have no doubt raised the pricing bar above acceptable levels.
