Developer Bungie’s highly anticipated shooter has been forecasted to become the highest selling title for a newly created IP.
Activision’s second quarter financial results were recently announced, and the company is betting big on the upcoming shooter Destiny. The publisher’s reports show that players can’t wait to get their hands on the game, with pre-orders already outpacing the high expectations set forth by Bungie and Blizzard.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has made no secret of the huge weight on Destiny’s shoulders, and he took the opportunity to restate his belief in the success of the game, saying, “We believe Destiny will be the largest new intellectual property launch in videogame history.” With pre-orders already “tracking at industry records”, it seems that the optimism is not entirely misplaced.
The beta itself attracted over 4.6 million players and the impressions have been highly positive. It is worth mentioning that such participation numbers for a beta build on a console have never before been reached. The development team is not getting carried away though, and the folks over at Bungie are hard at work improving the game and incorporating player feedback into the project.
However, Activision’s Eric Hirshberg was keen to remind everyone that the game they played in the beta will more or less be representative of the final product.
“We learned a lot by watching players engage with the game and hearing their feedback and Bungie is now making tweaks to optimize the game. I would describe these as tweaks and not major changes as we saw the fundamentals of the game to be very strong.”
Destiny will land on September 9th on current and next-gen platforms simultaneously.
