AMD launches the mid-range Radeon R9 280 for $279

AMD has finished rebranding its last-gen cards, with the final card in the HD 7xxx series, the HD 7950, being re-branded as the R9 280.

AMD has launched the R9 280 video card today, which is a rebranded version of last-gen’s HD 7950. The R9 280 is still based on a 28nm Tahiti silicon and comes with slightly increased clocks from the HD 7950. The card features 112 TMUs, 28 CUs and 32 ROPs along with 3 GB of 5 GHz GDDR5 video memory on a 384-bit bus interface. The card has a core clock of 827 MHz. The base clock of the card is lesser to that of the HD 7950’s 850 MHz, but its boost clock is higher at 933 MHz to the 7950’s 925 MHz. it also features Mantle, Direct X 11.2 and OpenGL 4.3.

The card is said to draw 250W when running full-tilt, and considering it runs the same hardware as the boost version of the HD 7950, it should be a great alternative to the R9 280X, which is available for around $430. A boom in virtual currency mining has led to a huge increase in demand of AMD’s R9 series cards, so it should be interesting to see if this card sees the same amount of consumer attention as the R9 290X and 280X.

The R9 280 will be available starting later this week, with various manufacturers set to offer their own versions of the card with factory overclocking and custom cooling. The R9 280 will retail for $279, which is slightly higher to the $250 Nvidia’s GTX 760 is available for.
