LG launches smartphone-controlled light bulbs

LG Electronics unveils its new “smart” LED lamps that can be set and controlled remotely via smartphones.

Mobile device-controlled home systems are hardly a new concept. In fact, as wireless technologies get developed further, it is very likely that these kinds of systems would become more and more common in the near future.

As indirect proof of this, the South Korean-based electronics company LG has recently announced the development of a new commercial LED lamp that can be wirelessly controlled via smartphones. These “smart” light bulbs can be turned on and off, and can have a specific level of brightness simply by remotely controlling the units using a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection.

Aside from switch and brightness controls, the LED lamps can also be set to turn on and off regularly at certain set time periods, or can be synchronized with the smartphone’s alarm schedules. The units can also be set to turn on only after a certain extended period of time, so that if you’re away, you can make your home look like someone’s still inside. Another nifty, albeit Android-exclusive, feature is the bulbs’ function to synchronize with music. It can for example, blink rhythmically in the same tune as the ringtone of the controlling smartphone.

The special app that will be used to control the bulbs are compatible for Android 4.3 and iOS 6.0+. As for its use longevity, LG claims that it can last for ten years with five hours of use each day.*The LED lamps are already launched locally in Korea with a price tag of 35,000 won (equivalent to $32.00).
