Sapphire’s AMD FirePro cards edge out Nvidia Quadro in benchmarks

Sapphire’s AMD’s FirePro cards are not only much more affordable to similar offerings from Nvidia, but are also faster, according to a new slew of benchmark tests.

While benchmark suites like 3DMark are used to gauge performance of standard video cards, the same cannot be used for professional video cards, like the AMD FirePro series and Nvidia’s Quadro. However, there is another benchmarking utility endorsed by both AMD and Nvidia called SPECviewperf that provides a clearer indication of performance when it comes to professional video cards.

Developed by the Standard Performance Evaluation company, SPECviewperf includes a host of graphics applications that test all major facets of a card. These tests emulate the real world usage of a card, and feature viewsets for widely used animation suites like CATIA, CREO, MAYA, SNX and Solidworks. Now in its twelfth version, the test features eight categories over which different cards from both AMD’s FirePro and Nvidia’s Quadro series were tested.

Here is the configuration test bed for the benchmarks:

OS:*64-bit installation of Windows 7 SP1

Processor: Intel E5-1660 3.30GHz

RAM: 16GB RAM

Drivers: AMD Catalyst 13.25.18.1, Nvidia 331.82

In the entry-level segment, Sapphire’s AMD FirePro V3900 was pitted against an Nvidia Quadro 410. Both cards are available for under $200, but when it comes down to the performance, the FirePro V3900 wins by a huge margin, and achieved 3.6 times better performance in the Maya test. The same scenario is seen with the FirePro V4900 and the Quadro K6000, with the V4900 beating the K6000 in all eight tests conclusively.

Moving over to the mid-range segment, the trend continues, with the FirePro W5000 edging out the Quadro K2000 in all tests. The W5000 was 2.3 times better than the K2000 in the SNX 02 viewset.

In the mid- to high-end segment, the difference between the FirePro W7000 and the Quadro K4000 isn’t as noticeable, but the W7000 still manages to pull ahead in seven of eight tests.

With the FirePro, AMD has worked with ISVs like Sapphire to optimize software and hardware to achieve better gains when it comes to real world usage. And the results are noticeable, as AMD cards have consistently edged out Nvidia offerings in these benchmark tests.
