MFi and Lightning licensing fees slashed by Apple

The move should entice more companies to start making official iOS accessories.

According to a new report, Apple has slashed the MFi and Lightning licensing fees, making it easier and more affordable for companies that were previously staying away from manufacturing official MFi accessories due to the associated licensing costs. Apple’s MFi program initially started back in 2005 as “Made for iPod,” back then the company was believed to charge $10 per device to 10 percent of the accessories’ total retail cost, whichever came first.

For third party manufacturers the MFi program, Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad, brings authorized components, documentation, technical support and tools. Apart from that, the Made for iPhone, Made for iPad and Made for iPod certification which gives their accessories an air of legitimacy, as well as the chance of being sold through Apple’s own retail stores around the world.

Since 2005 Apple has reduced the program’s fee, reports indicated that the company took 1.5 percent to 8 percent from the item’s total retail price, before changing the pricing method altogether. Apple then charged a $4 per connecter fee, while the “Pass-through” connector doubled the $4 fee.*Last year at the Worldwide Developers Conference Apple opened up its MFi program to cover official iOS 7 game controllers, some of them have already hit the market and have made gaming on iOS device a lot easier.
