Ubisoft has restarted development on the new Tom Clancy shooter Rainbow Six: Patriots, stating that the game “had to be remade” in order to meet the publisher’s quality assurance.
Rainbow Six: Patriots was first revealed two years ago, and since it donned the cover of Game Informer the game went dark except for brief mentions that it was still in development.
Now Ubisoft has shed light on the game’s status–but instead of a flurry of screenshots and footage, the publisher says that Patriots has to be restarted, and that many things (including the game’s name) may be changed.
North American President Laurent Detoc explained to IGN*why Ubisoft made the decision to flip the reset switch on the next-gen shooter, detailing that the core concepts “just didn’t work”:
There is a silver lining in this news, however. Detoc believes that next-gen consoles will be an asset to the team in terms of flexibility and ease-of-use both of which will no-doubt expedite the development process. The Xbox One and PS4′s raw power also provide a substantial advantage, even if the platforms are quite new.
Detoc also admits that there may be some hefty changes within the game itself; plot arcs could shift, characters might be altered, and the overall theme may even be re-aligned to fit the new vision. And we might see the Patriots name be scrapped in favor of something that better represents the refined scope of the shooter.
In any case, when the game was unveiled some time ago it was impressive to say the least, and many gamers have been clamoring to return to the definitive FPS elements offered by the Rainbow Six franchise. It will definitely be interesting to see how Ubisoft continues to shape and mold the series, and how the new entrant takes advantage of the graphical power of next-gen consoles to deliver an immersive experience.
Ubisoft has no release window outlined, and the studio might need some time to adjust–and then build–to the framework of the new consoles. All we know at this point is that the game is indeed changing face and it will be available on next-gen consoles–but it should be a game to look out for in the next coming months (maybe even years).
