Two amateur scientists from the UK have launched St. Nick and Rudolf into the stratosphere, providing a possible answer to the age-old question of how Father Christmas travels around the world each year.
Mark Ireland and Cassie Phelps sent the model to space using a £50 high altitude helium weather balloon, and after two hours the rig had reached a height of 100,000 ft above the Earth’s surface.
Not long after, the balloon succumbed to the heightened atmospheric pressure and burst, but not before allowing the scientists to capture stunning images of the Earth using a mounted camera.
In the video footage of the venture – which can be watched below – the curvature of the planet’s surface can clearly be seen.
Before deploying its parachute and slowly descending back to Earth, the balloon reached the stratosphere, which is very near but not quite outer space.
