President Obama and his administration continues to deal with fallout of spying on Americans and foreign citizens, including repeatedly asking major companies for user customer information.*
U.S. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden recently met with executives from leading Silicon Valley companies, including Google, Apple, Comcast, Microsoft and Twitter, to discuss government surveillance and other critical action items.
Following the meeting, executives invited were silent regarding the topics discussed, though said all discussions were productive and insightful.
Silicon Valley leaders are pleading with the president to limit government surveillance, as the amount of personal information requested continues to increase.* To help counter government snooping, many companies are beefing up encryption and security procedures to better protect users from unnecessary intrusion.
“This was an opportunity for the president to hear from CEOs directly as we near completion of our review of signals intelligence programs, building on the feedback we’ve received from the private sector in recent weeks and months,” according to a statement following the closed-door meeting.
Privacy protection has become a major talking point following Edward Snowden’s bombshell disclosure of widespread spying by the National Security Agency (NSA).* Obama pledged to engage with the CEOs in an open, free and innovative Internet – which sounds great – but government agencies will continue to find creative ways to get what they want.
At the very least, it’s good to see government officials are working with tech executives to try and move forward and find a way for both sides to come to an agreement.
