Original 'Tomb Raider' launched on iOS for $0.99, no announcement or fanfare attached

More than a decade after it launched on the PlayStation, the original Tomb Raider has quietly made its way to Apple’s mobile platform.

The mobile port of the game that kicked off one of the most popular gaming series and gave us the tough yet lovable protagonist Lara Croft comes as a complete surprise, as Square Enix hasn’t officially announced the release, not yet anyway. The game is available on the New Zealand App Store for $0.99 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (running iOS 7.0 or later), and global availability should be rolling out in the next few weeks.

While graphically it seems to be a rather faithful port, it remains to be seen how virtual controls will lend themselves to gameplay, especially in scenarios where a player will have to run, gun, and jump around in quick succession (scenarios that are plentiful in every Tomb Raider game.) Also, there’s no telling if a version for Android or Windows Phone is planned, though now that the game can be purchased from iTunes, an official announcement should be incoming with those details.
