Microsoft is swinging for the fences in its continued battle against Google, with ridiculous TV advertisements – and by cleverly trying to steal users from Gmail.
The new Outlook.com e-mail addition allows users to quickly migrate from Google Gmail over to Outlook using an easy-to-use, streamlined service. Outlook users will be able to send e-mail from Gmail addresses while logged into Outlook, along with chatting with Google contacts when logged into Outlook.
The migration option isn’t currently available to all Outlook e-mail users, but is being rolled out in the next few weeks for everyone.
“The structure of your inbox, including read/unread status of your e-mails, will be preserved. The new tool will even set up your Gmail address as a send-only account so you can continue to send e-mail from your @gmail.com address, right from Outlook.com, if you still want to,” Microsoft said in a press release.
Users will be able to transfer Gmail contacts into Outlook.com with a few easy steps: clicking a link and signing into Outlook and Gmail accounts; provide Microsoft permission to make the necessary changes; and Microsoft takes everything from here. *To setup e-mail forwarding, Microsoft sends users an e-mail with a few short, basic steps to begin e-mail forwarding from Gmail to Outlook.
Microsoft and Google have been in a continued war of stealing users from one another, in both the consumer and enterprise markets.
There were around 289 million Gmail users at the end of October 2012, with Google making its online services easier to use with just one account. *By late July, Microsoft reported 400 million active accounts with Outlook.com, and hopes this current effort to woo users from Google will boost its numbers up further.
