Sony finally decides to discontinue production and distribution of the Playstation Portable (PSP) in Japan.
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia (SCEJA) announced that it will cease production of the Playstation Portable (PSP) in Japan by the end of June. This will be roughly half a year after Sony’s general decision to stop PSP shipments in North America earlier this January.
With the company’s decision to bid farewell to their decade-old handheld system, it can now completely focus on the newer and more advanced Playstation Vita. In accordance to this transition, Sony opens several campaigns to make the PS Vita console closer and more affordable to the public. Discounts, as well as packages and other digital promos will be available for the duration of the transition campaign.
Purchased digital copies of PSP games can of course be still downloaded to the PS Vita using the same PSN account. For Japanese accounts, there is also the open but limited UMD Passport system, though a small fee is still required to download the digital copy onto the PS Vita.
The next step, which is the discontinuation of the PSP in Europe later this year, would finally complete the transition, ultimately ending the production era for the Playstation Portable since its very first release last December 2004.
