The latest version of the OS brings numerous bug fixes to Google’s Nexus and Google Play edition lineup, and will also be making its way to Motorola’s recent smartphones later this week.
Google has pushed the trigger on the Android 4.4.3 update’s rollout for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and both the 2012 and 2013 models of the Nexus 7, and also the*Google Play editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
The Android 4.4.3 update fixes a plethora of issues on Nexus and Google Play edition devices, including random reboots, high battery drain because of the camera app, connection drops, and more. It also brings an improved version of Google’s dialer app, with UI changes such as a white background in the keypad to make it more convenient to use. Security enhancements are included as well,*and the update should soon be reaching users around the world as the gradual rollout continues (it can be manually pulled from the Settings » About device » System updates menu as well, though that doesn’t always work.)
Not wanting to be left behind, Motorola announced that the update would be rolling out to the Moto X, Moto G and the Moto E as early as this week. The Moto X will get improved camera quality with better exposure consistency,*more realistic flash coloring, and better low-light images, while the Moto X and G get an option for pausing video recording. It’s impressive how quickly Motorola is pushing out the update, and it continues a streak of timely updates the company kicked off when the Moto X was announced as the first smartphone it developed under Google’s ownership.
As usual, there is no word on when major manufacturers like HTC and Samsung will start updating their devices to Android 4.4.3. A leak suggested Samsung has been testing the update on its devices for some time now, though it’s likely that a couple of manufacturers will skip 4.4.3 for the next version of Android that Google is expected to announce at the I/O developers conference later this month.
