Boot Camp for new Mac Pro only supports Windows 8 or later

Apple has dropped Windows 7 Boot Camp support for the late 2013 Mac Pro.

Released late last year, the Mac Pro is geared towards professionals and power users. If these users prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8, they’re out of luck as far as dual booting the OS on new Mac Pro goes.

For the uninitiated, Boot Camp is a software that allows Mac users to install and run Windows as well. This dual booting dynamic has been quite popular with users, particularly with those who absolutely feel the need to use software that’s only available for Windows. New Mac Pro’s Boot Camp Assistant does tell users that there’s no support for versions below Windows 8, and the same is reflected in an official support document. This makes the new Mac Pro the first Apple machine to drop support for Windows 7 with Boot Camp 5.

Mac Pro users can not install earlier versions of Windows. Perhaps its a signal from Apple that it will no longer support the legacy version on future Macs. Up for a refresh this year is the company’s MacBook lineup, as well as the iMac. It is therefore highly likely that when these products are updated, they too will drop support for Windows 7. One can question if that’s really the way to go, considering the fact that Windows 7 is still the go-to Microsoft operating system for many users.

Windows 8 was released in 2012, and it still doesn’t have a significant market share. As of March 2014, only 10.68 percent of all Windows powered PCs around the globe are running Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Whereas Windows 7 is clearly ahead, running on 47.31 percent of all Windows powered computers.
