John Sculley’s new brand will be manufacturing budget handsets and will go head to head with established vendors.
BGR India mentions that ex-CEO of Apple John Sculley is looking to start a new smartphone brand in India. The brand will be funded by Singapore-based Inflexionpoint, an investment firm in which Sculley is a founding partner. It has been mentioned that the brand will focus on the budget segment in the country.
The brand will be led by Ajay Sharma, former head of Micromax’s smartphone division. Sharma worked as the director of sales for HTC India before joining Micromax. BGR states that Sharma will be bringing a core team of his former colleagues from HTC and Micromax to work on the new brand.
While the new venture sounds interesting, the budget segment in India is a hotly contested one. Indian vendors like Micromax, Karbonn and Laval have seen a huge amount of success over the last two years in this segment, but they face a daunting task of maintaining their market share following the arrival of budget handsets from international vendors. Samsung was already selling handsets across all price points in India, but other vendors like LG, Sony and HTC are set to launch handsets in this segment later this year. Motorola has seen a lot of success with the recent launch of the Moto G, which has been the best-selling handset in this segment over the last month.
Nokia is also set to launch its Android-based Nokia X handset on March 15 for $137 (Rs. 8500). Sculley’s brand will initially be manufacturing devices in the $80 (Rs. 5000) to $240 (Rs. 15000) segment, which is sure to see a host of new devices from international as well as Indian handsets. While the smartphone market has grown by three times from 2012 to 2013, there is little room for newcomers. Chinese vendors like Gionee and Huawei have entered the Indian market last year, but are yet to see any mainstream consumer attention. We have to wait and see if Sculley’s brand fares any better.
