Fin is different from other smart rings in that it allows you to control your connected devices rather than show incoming notifications. It does this through a sensor that is embedded in the ring. The sensor can identify hand gestures which can then be used to control your connected device, like a smartphone, TV or in-car stereo system.
For instance, Fin can be used to turn the volume up or down on your mobile by swiping your finger upward or downward. You can also use gestures to answer calls, change tracks on your device or scroll through websites. In addition, users can also define custom gestures for actions. The smart ring connects using Bluetooth, and can stay switched on for a month on power-saving mode. Fin is also set to come with its own software development kit so that developers can build custom apps for it. There are still five days left to go on its Indiegogo campaign, so if you’re interested, you can buy the smart ring for $120. The device would be sent to backers sometime in the third quarter of 2014.
Fin is made by RHL Vision Technologies, a Kochi, India-based startup that unveiled the concept at Techcrunch Hardware Battlefield. While the initial device came with an external circuit board, the later versions of the device feature a flexible PCB design that accommodates all the sensors, components and battery within the casing of the ring.
