Sony achieves sales goal by selling 5.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles

Sony has sold over 5 million PlayStation 4 consoles globally, and with the console’s*Japanese launch imminent, sales numbers are only set to increase.

Back when Sony launched the PlayStation 4, it announced that it was targeting 5 million consoles sales globally by March. While that seemed like an ambitious target at the time, Sony has confirmed that it has crossed the figure by selling 5.3 million PS4 units since November. Sony has been consistently outselling the Xbox One ever since its launch, and while Microsoft had managed to maintain the lead in its home market, January numbers revealed that Sony outsold the Xbox One nearly two to one in the U.S.

Sony is set to launch the PS4 in Japan on February 22, which should give it another surge in sales. In addition, the PlayStation Now service is set to debut in the summer, along with additional sharing functionality that is set to come to the console with the next software update. Exclusive titles like Driveclub and Infamous: Second Son are also scheduled to launch soon on the console. Andrew House, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, mentioned that he was thrilled at the sales of the PS4, and that the console is only gaining more and more. “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation® fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”
