Man sues Ethiopian government for spying on him

A man is suing the country of Ethiopia for supposedly infecting his computer with malwares that recorded and uploaded his Skype phone calls and other private data.

The man, a US citizen living in Maryland, has accused the Ethiopian government of spying on him using malicious software.* According to reports, a program called FinSpy slipped through his email and began recording his Skype calls and other private information, and then uploading it to a server controlled by the Ethiopian government.

“We have clear evidence of a foreign government secretly infiltrating an American’s computer in America, listening to his calls and obtaining access to a wide swath of his private life,” said Nate Cardozo, an attorney for the American and a member of the Internet rights group called the Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF).

Government surveillance programs in an out of a certain country are certainly not a new phenomenon by any measure.* We’re not quite sure where this case will go, because it’s extremely difficult for an individual (or even an organization for that matter) to take Internet privacy matters into his own hands.

Although various government agencies are admitting that they conduct surveillance programs on their own citizens for safety reasons, Internet privacy and personal rights activists are vehement that the issue is much more than just about safety.

“The problem of governments violating the privacy of their political opponents through digital surveillance is not isolated—it’s already big and growing bigger,” according to Cindy Cohn, another legal counsel for the EFF.

The man is seeking compensation for damages under the notion that the perpetrators behind malware attacks violated US privacy laws.* We’re not quite sure how this will play out considering the US, too, is a major player in the surveillance game.
