Microsoft names cloud and server boss Satya Nadella to vacated CEO position.
Microsoft’s new CEO is one of its own.
Microsoft announced Tuesday morning that it was naming Satya Nadella, the company’s former executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group, to be its new CEO, a position former CEO Steve Ballmer announced he was vacating this past fall.
Nadella has been with Microsoft for for 22 years, mostly working with the company’s online divisions. One of his high profile placements involved working on the launch of Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
The appointment of Nadella isn’t the only big change at Microsoft. The company also announced today that co-founder Bill Gates is stepping down as chairman and his new title is “technology advisor.”
“I’m thrilled that Satya has asked me to step up, substantially increasing my time at the company,” Gates said in a video posted on Microsoft’s blog this morning. “I’ll have over a third of my time available to meet with product groups and it’ll be fun to define this next round of products working together.”
John Thompson, a member of Microsoft’s board of directors, will succeed Gates as chairman.
More to come…
