HTC shifting to focus on entry-level segment in 2014

Leaked specs of HTC’s upcoming M8 mini reveal a device that features mid-range hardware and on-screen buttons.

HTC is looking to focus on the entry-level handset segment, and will launch devices in the $150 to $300 segment.

In an interview with Reuters, chairwoman Cher Wang said HTC missed a huge chunk of the market by not launching handsets in the mid-tier segment, and that the organization will rectify its mistakes by launching devices in the entry-level and mid-tier segments this year.

Of the 53 mobiles that HTC currently sells in China, only two are available in the $150 segment. The $150 market is where a bulk of mobile sales occur. Instead, HTC is focused on the high-end category, where it has 21 handsets on sale that cost over $500. This year, however, Wang has announced that HTC will launch a lot more devices in the mid-tier and low-end segments.

One such device will likely be the HTC M8 mini. The handset will be a mini version of the M8 (One 2), and is set to come with a 4.5-inch 720p screen, 1.4 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 SoC, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory, 13MP camera at the back, 5MP camera at the front, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and HTC’s new Sense 6.0 UI on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The M8 mini is also set to follow the M8 in featuring on-screen navigation buttons. It isn’t clear as to when HTC will launch the M8 mini, but an earlier tweet by @evleaks mentioned that it would be sometime in the second quarter.

While the M8 mini does look to be a decent mid-tier offering, there are a lot of great mobiles that are starting to emerge in this category. Motorola’s Moto G is currently the best handset in the sub-$200 category, and if its recent launch in India is any indication, consumer interest in the handset is at an all-time high. Flipkart, one of India’s largest e-commerce stores, launched the Moto G in India last week, and the handset was sold out in under 15 minutes. It was later revealed that the store was carrying 20,000 Moto G units.

HTC needs a similar handset if it wants to stand a chance against other manufacturers this year. Last year was one of the worst for the manufacturer, and it needs to turn things around in 2014 to stay afloat. While the budget segment is the ideal place to begin, HTC needs to make sure it has a device that combines great hardware features at an affordable cost.
