The long awaited iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display might not make its way to stores this year as Apple struggles to churn out enough units.
The iPad Mini was Apple’s first foray into the sub-10″ tablet market.
Prior to that Steve Jobs had rubbished the idea of a small tablet as the market was flooded with similar devices running Android. A 7-inch canvas, according to him, was far too small to be productive. However such are the dynamics of consumer demand that Apple had to eventually cave in and manufacture the iPad Mini, which came with a 7.9-inch screen. This was a year and a half ago, back in WWDC 2012. This is the longest Apple has gone without a product refresh, which is why with each day the anticipation for the iPad Mini 2 grows.
Unfortunately though it looks as if the wait for the iPad Mini 2 will continue.*According to IHS iSuppli’s supply chain checks, the next generation iPad 5 is all set for an October launch, but the iPad Mini 2 will be pushed back. The manufacturing volume is just not at the level that would support an October launch. If Apple does go ahead with the original schedule, it could face severe shortage. At the current manufacturing capacity the iPad Mini 2 could be launched as late as Q1 2014 if Apple wants to ensure it can meet demand.
Another scenario would be for Apple to unveil the iPad Mini 2 next month, but release it later this year or earlier next year. That however seems improbable considering Apple rarely announces products before it can set a solid release date, which is usually the week after.
It is pertinent to mention that the iPad Mini is long overdue for a hardware refresh. Competitive tablets in the 7-8 inch market have leapfrogged Apple’s efforts in the past few months. The new Nexus 7 has received glowing reviews all over and even Amazon is upping the ante with the refreshed Kindles.
Missing the holiday season could be disastrous for the future of iPad Mini 2.
