'Watch Dogs' becomes best-selling new IP in gaming history

Ubisoft reports that Watch Dogs has*racked up a considerable sales record in its first week of availability, breaking milestones with 4 million copies sold to date.

From its inception, it was clear that Ubisoft’s hack-adventure would become a high-profile AAA release. The game itself gained roaring momentum after E3 2012, and even as it became apparent the finished product would be quite different from expectations, it has continued to snowball towards success.

On launch day Ubisoft broke the news that Watch Dogs sales raced to sell more units in a 24-hour period than any other game in the*company’s history. That’s quite a prestigious feat considering Ubi has crafted some of gaming’s greatest IP’s–Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry to name two.

Now the publisher has proudly revealed that Aiden’s techno-stealth adventure has just one-upped itself with yet another sales milestone.

In just a single week, Watch Dogs sold a staggering 4 million copies and will now be known as the record-holder for the best-selling new IP in video games history.

“With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Ubisoft “We’re really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future.”

Despite the near-unanimous claim that Watch Dogs doesn’t break many molds in the genre,*the impressive sales*are a big win for Ubi and pretty much ensures that the game becomes a franchised endeavor. In terms of open-world sales dominance, GTA V still reigns supreme with its incredible $1 billion earnings in just three days, but of course Watch Dogs is a *mere puppy age-wise and can’t be expected to take on the grizzled timber-wolf that is the GTA franchise.

It’ll be interesting to see how sales fare in a month’s time, and how they are affected*when big-name titles such as Destiny hit the market.

Be sure to check our official Watch Dogs review for our impressions on the game, and head on over to Ubi’s official website for more details.
