The budget alternatives to the high-end Galaxy Tab Pro trio and Note Pro 12.2, dubbed simply Galaxy Tab 4, have just gone official, looking eerily similar to their predecessors and keeping things humble in the hardware department.
It’s no joke, Samsung chose to take the wraps off its latest mid-range slate lineup on April Fools’ Day. Which, come to think of it, is quite fitting, as the three new tabs are so lackluster and unremarkable we can’t help but hope they’re not real.
Too bad they most certainly are. Offered in 10.1, 8 and 7-inch variations, the fourth-gen Galaxy Tabs all run the hottest, greatest Android build, 4.4 KitKat, but otherwise, they’re one or two steps behind the times.
Old-fashioned is likely the kindest way to describe the trinity’s screens, with resolution logged at 1,280 x 800 pixels across the board. That delivers a (barely) satisfactory 215 ppi pixel density on the smallest pad, but a horrendous 149 ppi on the largest.
Somehow tweaked to measure the same scrawny 8 mm in thickness as its forefather, the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 is a genuine featherweight, tipping the scales at a measly 487 grams. Like the 7 and 8 incher, it packs a 1.2 GHz quad-core chip (probably part of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 400 family) and 1.5 GB RAM, also making use of a solidly built 6,800 mAh battery.
Meanwhile, GTab 4 8.0’s juicer weighs in at 4,450 mAh, and Tab 4 7.0’s is oddly secretive vis-à-vis capacity. Moving on, if I were you, I wouldn’t expect much from the fresh mid-rangers in the imaging department, as identically underwhelming 3 MP and 1.3 MP cameras are found on their rears and fronts respectively.
In terms of connectivity, the triplets support Wi-Fi, as well as optional 3G and 4G LTE, and from an aesthetical standpoint, the “new” Galaxy Tabs don’t stray from the overall path set by their precursors, sticking to slippery, chintzy glossy plastic back covers. Granted, they try to take a page or two from Galaxy S5’s playbook.
