For a company that prides itself on its privacy and rare ability to actually keep a secret from time to time, Apple sure made a mess of the highly anticipated iPad Air 2/iPad mini 3 announcement. Yes, both iPad lines are in for refreshes after all, as iTunes just revealed.
Of course, one has to wonder about the convenient timing of the apparent blunder, especially as the intel exposed is, well, not that spectacular. Aside from pinpointing iPad mini 3’s imminence, which has been a bone of contention in the rumor mill of late, the “leak” endorses the using of Touch ID fingerprint recognition on the next-gen 7.9 and 9.7 incher.
Yeah, as if that was ever a big mystery. Also not surprising in the least, the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 look virtually identical to their predecessors from behind, and have only the tweaked home buttons to individualize their faces.
Oh, and in case you didn’t see it coming from a mile away, iOS 8.1 is to debut later today, bringing the Apple Pay digital wallet service to the table. Yeah, no, clearly the biggest exposé concerns the always unpredictable naming scheme of these things.
But even the iPad Air 2 and especially iPad mini 3 monikers were fairly easy to anticipate, given iPad mini with Retina display 2 would’ve been quite the mouthful, not to mention really, really silly.
Remember, the full reveal goes down later today, in Cupertino, and iPad Air 2’s key upgrades should include anti-reflective screen coating, processing speed improvements, courtesy of A8, a camera sensor revision and, maybe, just maybe, an upping of the RAM ante to 2 GB.
Chromatically, you’re likely to be offered a gold option for the first time, albeit scoring the upgraded 9.7 incher could be quite the challenge all through the end of the year. As far as the iPad mini 2 is concerned, the list of improvements will probably be shorter, although the A8 chip, a better camera and Touch ID integration are guarantees here as well. Everybody ready to rumble?
