The Android app compatibility on Google’s Chromebooks is a big step in the company’s plans to integrate its popular mobile and notebook operating systems.
Back at*Google I/O in June, the search giant announced that Chrome OS would be gaining the ability to run Android applications without any modifications. Now, Google has announced the first batch of Android apps that will run on Chromebooks – these include Evernote, Vine, Duolingo, and Slight Words. The apps will run in their default mobile format, and can also be resized to look like more traditional desktop apps.
The app compatibility comes as a result of Google’s App Runtime for Chrome project. The runtime is currently in beta, but Google says it will be working with a select group of Android developers to add more compatible apps. The company is also taking requests from users for apps that they would like to see run on Chrome OS, though it remains to be seen just how many of the popular apps will gain compatibility with Google’s ultra-cheap Chromebooks.
