Huawei wins Apple-mocking challenge by pitting Ascend Mate 7 against iPhone 6 Plus

Time to pack up and leave the Apple-deriding ring for Samsung, Sony, HTC, Microsoft, Asus and OnePlus, as Huawei just pushed the iPhone 6 Plus on the ropes gasping for air with a simple, elegant yet deadly blow.

Comparing fresh iPhones, destined to sell in tens, maybe hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, with low-key Huawei Ascend Mates, little known outside Asia and not very popular in the mainstream Chinese market either, is clearly futile.

It’s not like people will all of a sudden start flocking to stores looking for Huawei gear in lieu of larger-than-ever Apples just because from a certain standpoint the former is superior to the latter. Still, it’s good to remind victims of aggressive marketing there are choices around, and some could be deemed better than “bigger than bigger”. Um, you know what we mean.

You don’t? Then seeing as how a picture is worth a thousand words, we’d like to direct you to the very suggestive photo above. The image stars a recently announced and yet-to-be-released Ascend Mate 7 next to a device that needs no introduction.

Given the iPhone 6 Plus is fairly hard to come by, to say the least, there’s no way to know for sure if we’re dealing with an authentic, working unit. It could well be some kind of clone. Or an exquisitely accurate mockup device.

But the point Huawei’s chairman, Yu Chengdong, aka Richard Yu, is trying to make on Weibo is valid either way. The iPhone 6 Plus, according to official measurements, is 158.1 mm tall. The Ascend Mate 7 only 157 mm. Meanwhile, the former offers 5.5 inches of usable screen real estate, and the latter 6, yes, 6 whopping inches.

Needless to stress the laziness of Apple’s design team and the extraordinary dedication of Huawei’s counterpart led to the staggering 0.5 inches gap being closed like it was nothing. It’s almost as if words are futile now, huh? Too bad so few tech consumers consider things like screen-to-body ratio before making a purchase.
