DMP unveils the world's smallest GPU yet

DMP announces the development of a new GPU, one that is considered the smallest that is yet developed.

Digital Media Professionals Inc. (DMP), the same Japanese GPU design company that created the PICA200 GPU for the Nintendo 3DS, comes back with yet another milestone in consumer tech. The company has just unveiled a new GPU designed for mobile devices, and it is as of now currently considered the smallest in the world.

The newly designed GPU, named as the UI Drawing Engine IP core Ant, is based from a TSMC 28nm processor, having only a size of about 0.5 x 0.5 mm. This comparatively means that Ant is about 95 percent smaller in terms of area, or just about a twentieth of the size of standard GPUs currently installed on smartphones. This makes it perfect for any wearable tech, as suggested by the official press release, because it could easily fit in form factors that allow further miniaturization of mobile devices. *In addition, the particular design choice also meant that its tiny size still packs a punch when it comes to energy efficiency and performance, and can be used as a high-end GPU for the same devices.

The new GPU Ant is expected to provide a significant boost in terms of design flexibility and device compactness, should its commercial use become more standard in the following years. There are also important applications in consumer tech currently being considered for Ant, as it can be easily installed on medical equipment, tech accessories, smart devices, and even assistant robots.

DMP plans to officially introduce the UI Drawing Engine IP core Ant, and reveal more about its actual specifications in the upcoming Computer Vision Seminar 2014 this end of August.
