The developer of this popular game has confirmed that he is going to bring it back, despite having taken it down.
Flappy Bird became an instant hit around the world, and no one really knows why. Perhaps people were attracted to its retro style graphics or perhaps it was just the level of frustration it drove players to. There were reports of people actually smashing their phones when they were unable to post a decent score, and developer Dong Nguyen said that is exactly when he took it down in the first place.
The game itself is actually very simple. There are no complex controls, players just tap on the device’s display and the bird responds. It may sound easy, but it really isn’t. When multiple reports started coming in about people losing it when playing Flappy Bird, Nguyen thought it was best to remove the game from the App Store. It had climbed to the top of the App Store top free apps chart in a matter of days, and had stayed there for quite a few weeks. Some reports claimed that he was earning as much as $50,000 from ad revenue daily.
Nguyen observed radio silence for a few days after taking Flappy Bird down. He reappeared earlier this month after a lengthy profile was published in Rolling Stone. He told the magazine that he is “considering” bringing Flappy Bird back, and that if it did return, there would be a caveat. Nguyen said he’d add a warning which would tell players to take a break. Today, responding to a query on Twitter, Nguyen confirmed that Flappy Bird for iOS is coming back, but “not soon,” he adds.
He hasn’t elaborated on that as yet, so its unclear how long it will take for the game to return. If it does return to iOS, Android users should expect the same within a few days after that. If you liked Flappy Bird before, enjoy life while you can, you might stay glued to your phone after it drops.
