Ouya is looking to extend its platform to other devices beyond its game console.
Ouya has big plans for the future, as detailed by its CEO Julie Uhrman in a recent interview with Slashdot. Uhrman stated that Ouya is “really a software company; The largest team inside Ouya is software engineers,” and that the idea behind Ouya Everywhere is to bring Ouya’s software and services to other devices and form factors.
That doesn’t mean that Ouya will be moving away from the hardware segment. Uhrman reiterated that there will be regular hardware refreshes, and that work on the next version of the Ouya console is underway. The new console “at a minimum will have a higher performing chipset,” and will also feature a redesigned controller.
As for the Ouya Everywhere initiative, Uhrman stated that a deal has been signed, which will be announced in a few weeks’ time. “We started having conversations at CES and we’re really surprised by the pickup the idea had, so we’re jumping in with both feet and it’s a core focus for us.” While Uhrman did not divulge any further details about the deal, she did mention the kind of devices that Ouya is looking to bring its software platform to. “It could be another set-top [box]. It could be the TV itself. There’s a number of different ways that games can be played on the television, and we’re actively exploring all of them.”
Ouya has struggled to find traction with users initially, but is now doing well in the micro-console segment. It should be interesting to see the direction the organization takes with Ouya Everywhere, and the features it would offer through its platform.
