Toshiba gives its newest Blu-ray players a needed boost for the next high -resolution screen standard.
Disc-players may look a bit outdated, but with good media format compatibility and connectivity options, today’s Blu-ray players are actually more of a smart TV enhancement than simple disc-spinning machines. This is especially true when we’re now talking about a feature that would make your “low-res” 1080p movie look better on a 4K screen.
Toshiba’s Symbio media box line-up is about to have two new models, the BDX5500 and BDX3500, both of which would sport new functions that are specially catered for today’s newer TV models. The BDX5500 in particular, is installed with a “screen upscale engine” that would fix the image’s texture and edges as it is stretched on a bigger 4K screen, enhancing standard 1080p videos and allowing them to be played on a 4K TV without a significant decrease in overall quality. This model will also be able to properly adjust TV channels on a 4K screen with the same upscaling features.
The BDX3500 on the other hand, would be more or less a direct upgrade of its earlier model, having enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity features.
Additionally, an app will also be available for the two models that would provide additional features when used on a smart TV, though details about this are yet to be revealed.
Toshiba announced that they plan on making the BDX5500 and BDX3500 commercially available before the end of this year’s first quarter.
