A Samsung executive announced that the Galaxy S5 will launch along with a new version of the Galaxy Gear after the Mobile World Congress.
Lee Young Hee, executive vice-president of Samsung’s mobile division, revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that the Galaxy S5 would launch after the Mobile World Congress.
Earlier rumors indicated that Samsung was looking to launch the Galaxy S5 at the MWC, but Hee indicated that it would be launched at a Samsung event after MWC, like it has previously done with the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3. Hee indicated that the mobile would launch sometime in March or April.
Samsung will also launch a new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch along with the Galaxy S5. Hee said the next Galaxy Gear would be less bulky, and that it would come with advanced features and functionality. Hee said that the design of the Galaxy S5 would be very different from the Galaxy S4, and that it would feature a new “cover.”
The South Korean manufacturer has long been rumoured to be working on an iris scanning technology that will be available on the Galaxy S5.
“Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5,” Hee said.
In addition to the Galaxy S5, Hee divulged details about a device with a three-sided screen that allows users to view notifications from an angle. Samsung demoed this Youm screen technology, and Hee said that such a device would launch in the second half of 2014. “We are targeting consumers who want more professional use and tend to be willing to pay more for handsets.”
Samsung is looking to diversify its product portfolio following a decline in sales, and as such is launching a Lite version of the Galaxy Note 3, dubbed the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, at the MWC in Barcelona next month. In addition, the South Korean manufacturer is also looking to debut a host of other mobile devices in Barcelona that target different price segments.
