A new report claims that YouTube will demonstrate a new 4K streaming technology at CES that uses considerably less data than current formats.
The new streaming tech is reportedly based on Google’s VP9*codec, which was announced in 2013 as an alternative to the*H.265 video codec used in most 4K implementations today. According to GigaOM, Google will be showing off 4K streaming at the booths of LG, Panasonic and Sony on a system built around VP9, which 19 hardware manufacturers have already pledged to support, including companies like ARM, Intel, Samsung, and Toshiba.
According to*Francisco Varela, global director of platform partnerships at YouTube, the move to adopt VP9-based 4K streaming is aimed at delivering higher resolutions at reasonable bit rates, while reducing the amount of data necessary to stream regular HD videos by about half. It’s a move that will help the world’s most popular*video-sharing website do away with buffering, the nuisance that currently plagues online video streaming.
