Nationwide retailer Target has recently admitted to accidentally sending out ‘a small number’ of early Xbox Ones to a few gamers, citing a “shipping error” as the cause.
A few lucky gamers who pre-ordered their Xbox Ones at Target received them in the mail over two weeks before the official release date. So far three early Xbox One consoles have been confirmed, two of which were sent by Target. A third Xbox One was seen listed on eBay with a ridiculous $10,000 price tag, but the listing was quickly pulled.
The retailer has since owned up to their mistake and affirms that a very small portion of consoles have been shipped. As Kotaku reports, a spokesperson issued an official response:
As a result of the glitch, Microsoft’s next-gen console has been featured in a flurry of Tweets from one early recipient, who has freely shared and revealed many details on the console to gamers across the world.
In the last 24 hours, the user @Moonlightswami has interacted with the gaming community on his experiences, answering various queries and shedding light on many different aspects on the console including game installs and dashboard UI features.
Kotaku also reported on how the shipping error presumably happened. A source indicated that Target apparently forgot to assign a shipping date to the non-Day One editions of the Xbox One, which resulted in the retailer shipping them out as soon as they received stock.
The source goes on to divulge that Target set a release date for the Day One edition, which makes sense considering it was the lime green regular edition that was sent rather than the black launch version. Kotaku‘s retail source also told them that as many as 150 units might have been shipped early–but of course this information has yet to be confirmed and remains speculation.
It will be interesting to see if anyone else finds an early Xbox One on their doorstep, however if you do find a surprise package, you should be wary of announcing console features or playing on Xbox LIVE. Microsoft has since banned Midnightswami for his revelations, but Xbox spokesperson Larry Hryb soon announced that his ban is only temporary.

“Due to a systems error, Target shipped a small number of video game consoles prior to the street date. The vast majority of video game preorders are slated to arrive on the street date.”
