Galaxy Gear support coming to eight Samsung devices in near future

Samsung has announced that support for its Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be extended to eight devices through a software update.

At launch, the Galaxy Gear was only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, a major disadvantage that made it somewhat of a niche device. Initially, Samsung had announced that compatibility would be coming to the Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II via the Android 4.3 update (which the S4*has already received), but now the list has been expanded to add five more devices -*these include the Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3, and S4 Zoom.

This can also be taken as a sign that these devices will be getting updated to Android 4.3, as 4.3 is a requirement for full compatibility with the smartwatch (since previous versions of the OS don’t support low-power Bluetooth 4.0.) The update should begin rolling out in November and work its way to devices through the next couple of months, though it likely won’t change anyone’s stance*on the poor value*of Samsung’s first foray into the smartwatch market.
