The NSA spies on porn habits to discredit target 'radicalizers'

*In a leaked document, the NSA was found to have been using porn and other potentially-incriminating material in a plan to discredit its targets, who are potential “radicalizers” in the US and abroad.

Who knew that porn could be used as a tool to protect national security?

The National Security Agency has been criticized for its eavesdropping activities across the Internet, including spying on both domestic and foreign targets. While this is meant to be for intelligence purposes, recently-leaked documents spell out how the agency is likewise using targets’ online habits as a potential weapon for discrediting would-be “radicalizers”.

The NSA has reportedly gathered data on online sexual activity and has gone as far as log evidence of visits to pornographic websites, as part of a proposed plan to use this information to harm the reputations of would-be radicalizers. The leaked document, shared by whistleblower Edward Snowden, has actually identified six targets, identifying each one’s “personal vulnerabilities” that can be studied and exploited through electronic surveillance.

The plan is to undermine the target’s credibility, reputation and authority in his or her community, with the broader aim of preventing future terror acts. The document reports that “radicalizers appear to be particularly vulnerable in the area of authority when their private and public behaviors are not consistent.” Some findings included “viewing sexually-explicit content online,” as well as “using sexually explicit persuasive language when communicating with young girls.”

The director of the NSA was identified as the originator of the document, although intended recipients of the gathered information include other agencies, like the DoJ and DEA as recipients.

Civil liberty advocates have decried the act, saying it is prone to abuse, especially given how the NSA is likely to define “abuse” narrowly. However, government believes it is within legal bounds, because it is meant to prevent harm. “[I]t should not be surprising that the US Government uses all of the lawful tools at our disposal to impede the efforts of valid terrorist targets who seek to harm the nation and radicalize others to violence,” said Shawn Turner, director of public affairs for National Intelligence.

Another agreement in favor of spying and discrediting is that it may actually be more humane than dropping a bomb on human targets, argued a former NSA official, comparing the tactic as “dropping the truth on them” instead of resorting to violence. In fact, the same tactic had been used by the government against political leaders and activists, whether as a means of blackmail, harassment or straight out discrediting. The information usually involves sex — homosexuality (a big deal during the mid 20th century), extramarital affairs, and now pornography.

Intel’s plans for Thunderbolt in 2014

Device charging and peer-to-peer connectivity are in the works for next year’s Thunderbolt controller.

Intel has big plans for Thunderbolt in 2014 as it pushes to make the connectivity standard more competitive against USB and now, to some extent, Ethernet.

According to documents obtained by VR-Zone, Intel is looking to bring some features found in USB and Ethernet to its high-speed connectivity platform with its 2014 controller. The new features that Intel is including are the ability to charge devices and transfer files between computers using a straight connection.

Here’s a breakdown of the 2014 controller:

There’s not much new on this diagram that hasn’t been already announced with the exception of the projected total power draw. Intel believes that it will have a TDP of approximately 1.5W and a approximately a 1mW idle draw.

Intel says that it’s including power delivery over Thunderbolt in its 2014 controller because of high customer demand. Intel notes that this controller will only have a stop-gap solution for power delivery until a full-featured solution arrives in 2015.

Slides show that Thunderbolt will be able to deliver up to 53W over a standard tethered cable via the PC’s regular Thunderbolt port.

The big question with Thunderbolt charging is adoption by manufacturers. Charging is a substantial addition to Thunderbolt, as it was one advantage USB had over the protocol. However adoption has been been quite slow, sources say, because of licensing barriers and strict validation.

The other big feature Intel is pushing out with next year’s Thunderbolt is the ability to do peer-to-peer connections. This means users can transfer files at 10Gbps, and share resources such as internet connectivity and printers.

Intel likely not trying to market this as an Ethernet killer, but a specialized protocol to use in workplaces that need to do frequent transfers of large file sizes. Intel says that regular Thunderbolt cables will suffice for peer-peer connections, unlike USB which requires a special bridge cable, which makes things very simple and straightforward.

More Thunderbolt announcements are expected at CES in January.

Lian Li seeks customer feedback on the prototype PC-A51 chassis

Lian Li wants to gain the edge on the competition by crowdsourcing the design of its new case.

Lian Li wants your feedback on its upcoming chassis, the PC-A51.

The design of the PC-A51 is based off the PC-A05N, which has been very well-received by the modding community. Lian Li wants the PC-A51 to similarly fare well, and as such is incorporating a few features that users requested for.

#gallery-52 margin: auto; #gallery-52 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-52 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-52 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

For instance, the PC-A51 works with 240/280mm radiators, comes with a tool-less HDD bay where you can fit in either 5 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drives and has more room for cable management behind the motherboard tray.

#gallery-53 margin: auto; #gallery-53 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-53 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-53 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The PC-A51 comes with dimensions of 230 X 393 X 489 mm (W X H X D), and has enoguh room for accommodating motherboards of ATX/Micro-ATX form factors. There is a 140 mm fan at the front and a 120 mm fan atthe back of the chassis. The chassis can fit in video cards of up to 280 mm in length, and PSUs of up to 160 mm in length.

#gallery-54 margin: auto; #gallery-54 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-54 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-54 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Lian Li is retaining a few elements from the PC-A05N, like the location of the PSU, which will be mounted at the front. There is also going to be a windowed version of the chassis which features black and red exterior and interior accents.

If you want to contribute your ideas on what the PC-A05N should feature, click here to go to Lian Li’s official thread.

Microsoft not considering Stephen Elop for CEO?

New report from Bloomberg says the company is leaning away from former Nokia executive in hunt for new CEO.

Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is no longer considered the frontrunner in the deliberations as to who will lead Microsoft, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Anonymous sources that spoke to Bloomberg say both Stephen Elop and internal candidate Tony Bates are still being considered, but the board is giving Ford Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally and Microsoft executive Satya Nadella a keen eye.

Microsoft’s board is aiming to have their decision out by the end of the year. In a recent interview, Bill Gates, the board’s chairman, declined to give a timeline on the decision making process only stating “it’s a complex role to fill.”

As expected neither Microsoft nor Ford are commenting on this report.

Scythe introduces the Kotetsu CPU cooler

Scythe’s 120mm tower style Kotetsu CPU cooler offers great value for money at $35.

Scythe is well-known when it comes to CPU coolers, and its latest offering, the Kotetsu, offers features similar to that of costlier CPU coolers. Available for $35, the Kotetsu is a tower-style cooler that features an aluminium fin structure through which four six millimetre copper heatpipes emerge. The fin structure has fins that come in different patterns, which allows in more effective heat dissipation.

China to visit the moon next month

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of their national space program, China is preparing to launch one of the most complex space missions they have ever made.

China is sending another mission to the moon.

Unfortunately though, our nearest neighbor won’t be visited by Chinese astronauts (not yet at least), but rather by a lander and a rover. The robot visitors are part of the Chang’e 3 mission, which is part of the second phase of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. Final preparations for the mission are now already underway, and the launch itself is scheduled next month on December 1.

The primary objective of the Chang’e 3 mission is to survey the lunar surface using modern observation instruments, and to collect moon samples to send back to Earth. In addition, it is also tasked with the equally important objective of observing the universe from the moon, with the use of its near-ultraviolet astronomical telescope.

The first phase of the their lunar program included the Chang’e 1 and Chang’e 2, lunar orbiters which provided precious data of the lunar surface (to help search for favorable landing spots for example), as well as providing a technical platform to build upon that would help the space agency accumulate knowledge and experience in the field of lunar spaceflight.

After the Chang’e 3 mission, they would then proceed to further push the lunar exploration program with more objective-specific missions, with the possibility of even sending astronauts to the lunar surface by the year 2025-2030.

It is quite notable to point out that this mission is actually the first time that a spacecraft would once again visit the surface of the moon, after a long period of about four decades. The last manned mission to the moon was the American Apollo 17 mission in 1972, while the last robotic probe to land on the moon was the Soviet Luna 24 lander in 1976.

Redbox Instant iPhone app now supports AirPlay streaming

The Netflix competitor Redbox Instant app for iPhone has received a new update which brings support for AirPlay streaming.

Redbox launched the Redbox Instant service with Verizon as a bona fide competitor for the infamous Netflix video streaming service earlier this year.*Through the app, users can browse movie titles and instantly watch them if they want to. Users also have the option to reserve newest releases at their local Redbox. Movies purchased on the web can be downloaded through the app for offline viewing as well. However to use the app, a subscription to Redbox Instant by Verizon is required.

AirPlay streaming is definitely a much awaited feature, customers can finally stream movies through Redbox Instant on their iPhone to the TV with which an Apple TV set-top box is hooked up.*Though there are some caveats that should be kept in mind. AirPlay support is only present for streaming video, not titles that have been downloaded to the device. Furthermore, the app stops streaming if a text or a notification turns in, so if you’re going to use Redbox Instant on iPhone to stream a movie, its best that you ensure no texts or notifications pop up during the viewing session or they’ll only ruin the session for you.

The app update also brings a few bug fixes and improvements to the recommendation engine, which is now much more capable of understanding the user’s viewing habits and recommending titles based on them. Redbox Instant for iPhone is available as a free download from the App Store.
