Refreshed ASUS PadFone Infinity to hit local stores on Nov 9

The updated PadFone Infinity packs a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 SoC and features the new PixelMaster camera technology that lets you take high quality 3-megapixel shots by combining 3 pixels into 1.

In a bid to keep up with the current crop of flagship droids, ASUS has announced that their freshly updated PadFone Infinity will be available in Singapore from November 9.

Changes to the PadFone Infinity have been limited to being under the hood with ASUS electing to only bump up the hardware while preserving the exterior of the original PadFone Infinity. First off, the processor has been upgraded to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core SoC clocked at 2.2GHz, up from the Snapdragon 600 that powered the first iteration. This should result in a significant boost in speed and graphics performance, especially when running computationally intensive applications like 3D games.

While retaining the same 13-megapixel shooter of its predecessor, the updated PadFone Infinity debuts the new PixelMaster camera technology, featuring a new Hi-Light mode that combines 3 pixels into 1, giving you smaller 3-megapixel but much cleaner images — similar to Nokia’s PureView oversampling technology. Other camera enhancements include a 12fps burst mode and an eye-popping 35fps “turbo burst” mode.

The rest of the specification sheet is identical to that of its predecessor, including the 5-inch 1080p IPS display, 2GB of RAM, LTE connectivity and a 2,400mAh battery. Software-wise, the PadFone refresh runs Android 4.2.2 out of the box with a slightly updated proprietary skin.

Pricing and availability*

The new ASUS PadFone Infinity will be available in Platinum White first from all authorized ASUS resellers and from mobile operators M1 and Starhub, with the Titanium Black variant following at a later date.

The PadFone Infinity will go for S$898 and S$998 for the 16GB and 32GB models respectively. The optional Infinity Station will set you back an additional S$328.

Twitter updates mobile, web apps with in-stream video and image previews

Twitter is attempting to make its desktop and mobile interfaces more engaging. The latest update includes in-stream previews for photos and videos.

Twitter is considered as a social network meant more for sharing status updates and messages, as opposed to the likes of Facebook, which encourage better engagement through multimedia sharing, comment threads and tagging. But in its run up to its planned initial public offering (IPO), Twitter is experimenting with ways to improve the user experience, which includes some tweaks on its web interface and mobile apps.

In Twitter’s latest updates for its iOS and Android apps, the status update stream will now include previews for images and videos embedded in the message. Twitter says tweets are now “more visual” and each tweet will give users options to engage — replying, retweeting or marking a tweet as a favorite, straight from the status update itself.

For now, only Twitter photos and Vine videos will automatically be previewed in the stream, although it is likely that Twitter will also support other formats and media sources in the future. Twitter has lagged in this respect, especially with the social network’s stance against embedding Instagram photos, particularly because the popular photo-sharing service is now owned by Facebook.

This update goes beyond engagement, however. Twitter has been experimenting with ways to improve profitability, particularly through advertising. Buzzfeed says this update improves the virality of media-laden tweets, making it easier to share, favorite and follow. Additionally, auto-playing media will pave the way for commercial or sponsored content on users’ Twitter feeds. GigaOm says this could either be helpful or hurtful. It might help Twitter’s bottomline by making it a more attractive platform for mobile advertising, but users might be turned off with auto-playing videos if these are commercial in nature.

Still, Twitter allows Android and iOS users to turn off auto-previews, which means users who would rather not have multimedia content automatically playing on their feeds have the option to stick to a plainer interface.

Google rolls out vanity URLs for Google+ users

Custom URLs were only available to verified accounts owned by celebrities and brands now regular users can now claim their own custom URL for public use.

Google lags behind its competitors in the social networking space, namely Facebook and Twitter in terms of popularity and engagement. However, what it lacks in popularity it makes up for in terms of integration with Google services, such as Gmail and Google Search. Still, its core social networking service is not as customizable as the likes of Facebook. Even profile URLs came in long numeric form — hardly easy for anyone to memorize or share.

This has actually given rise to services like gplus.to, which is basically a redirect service to one’s Google Plus account. Google has rolled out custom or vanity URLs for celebrities and brands as of 2012, which made it easier to launch promos and share updates through Google+. Ordinary users were promised a similar update, and it seems Google+ has now opened this functionality to the public.

Custom URLs are not for everyone, however. According to the Google+ getting started guide for custom URLs, accounts need to be at least 30 days old, have a profile picture and have 10 or more followers, among others. Also, for regular users, custom URLs are actually pre-approved, and not chosen arbitrarily, which reduces one’s choices for a Google+ URL. What Google does allow is the changing of URL’s style, such as capitalizations and accents. For example, google.com/+VRZone can also be styled as google.com/+vrzone, which is what this publication uses.

Google warns that once a user has claimed his or her custom URL, it cannot be changed. This is similar to Facebook’s own policy disallowing changes to custom URLs for both personal profiles and pages.

Now that custom URLs will make Google+ profiles easier to access and remember, will it also improve the social network’s usage and engagement numbers?
