Original Motorola Moto G gets updated to Android 4.4.4

The update comes just a few days before Android Lollipop is set to become the latest publicly available version of the OS.



The original Moto G was, and still is, quite an important device, as it started the current trend of companies offering a stellar Android experience at low price points. It was no surprise then that Motorola was quick to offer the Android 4.4 update to the device earlier this year, but it seems the second-generation Moto G took the company’s focus off the original, as it’s only now releasing the minor Android 4.4.4 update for the device.

The update is currently rolling out to the international 3G model, but Motorola’s website suggests it will soon go out to other models as well (there are eight different models, so it will likely take some time.) Android 4.4.4 doesn’t bring too many changes, but it does offer important security and bug fixes that should improve the experience for users, albeit from behind the scenes.

As Motorola recently revealed, the first-gen Moto G will also be getting updated to Android 5.0 (Lollipop), though the company hasn’t given any concrete time frame.*For now, users of the Moto G can head into the Settings » About phone » System update menu to try and grab the Android 4.4.4 update right away, or simply wait it out till the automatic update notification shows up.

HTC releases Rapid Charger 2.0 accessory, claims 40% quicker charge

HTC has a new quick charge accessory that claims to juice up your HTC-branded smartphones up to 40% quicker.



The new charging unit uses Qualcomm’s Rapid Charge 2.0 technology, and works mainly on some of HTC’s newer handsets.* These include the HTC M8, E8, M8 Hardon/Kardon Editions and the Desire Eye.* Before you head over to the HTC website to add the new gadget to your shopping cart, you need to know the item is currently unavailable in the US.* There is no information on the exact date in which the item will be available, but hopefully you don’t have to spend a fortune to buy it.

Similar accessories from Motorola is running for around $35, so we don’t expect the HTC variant to be priced any higher.

Reinforced iPhone 6 Plus units are a myth

Rumors about iPhone 6 Plus units being reinforced due to #bendgate have been smashed.





Soon after the new iPhone 6 models were released a couple of months back several reports surfaced online of iPhone 6 Plus units bending when carried around in a particularly tight jeans pocket, this gave rise to a phenomenon that came to be known as #bendgate. However Apple clarified that it had only received 10 formal complaints regarding this issue for the millions of units that it shipped, so it wasn’t as widespread as many thought it was.

Recently reports starting circulating that Apple had quietly fixed the bending issue in iPhone 6 Plus by adding reinforcements to the frame. This would have resulted in an increase in the device’s weight. A Reddit user claimed to have noticed a 21 grams weight different between his brand new iPhone 6 Plus model as opposed to his wife’s two-month old unit.

This was chalked up as reinforcements being added in the frame to prevent the device from being bent. However repair firm iFixit went ahead and tried this on another unit and only found 0.8 grams worth of difference between weight. It should be mentioned here that due to the difference between configuration and manufacturing process, a difference of 1.5 grams between any two iPhone 6 Plus models is expected any way.

That most certainly does not mean that Apple has internally made a change to the iPhone 6 Plus and at the cost of weight taken care of an issue that affected only a minor subset of all the customers who purchased an iPhone 6 Plus.

Hello, Lenovo: Motorola takeover completed at last

Google has one less thing to worry about, as Motorola Mobility is officially Lenovo property.



The most surprising tech purchase of the year has been finalized after eight excruciatingly long months of waiting. Excruciating for all parties involved, we presume, given Google’s eagerness to offload the financially struggling handset business of its daughter company, and Lenovo’s ardent desire to become relevant in the Western mobile décor.

Motorola? Well, they probably just wanted the insecurity to end. And perhaps a new team of owners who can appreciate their striking creative revival. Moto is likely light-years away from bringing in profits, but the 360 smartwatch, Nexus 6, Droid Turbo, second-generation X and G smartphones are among the best reviewed products in their respective categories.

Can Lenovo build on the thriving popularity of Moto gadgets? It depends on how involved they plan to be in further research and development. Up until now, we’ve heard a lot of encouraging promises. The Motorola brand will definitely stick around for at least a while longer.



Roadmaps will reportedly go unchanged, and “pure Android” should continue to be a main focus for… Lenovorola? Motovo? Also, Rick Osterloh is set to stay on as the president and chief operating officer of Motorola. Under the supervision of Liu Jun, president of Lenovo’s Mobile Business Group, but with a fair share of responsibilities and decision-making power, we’re guessing.

Basically, Lenovo doesn’t intend to significantly alter anything of importance, fire Motorola personnel, or relocate anybody. The Chicago HQ will still be there next year, and Moto is keen on maintaining offices “around the world, including in Silicon Valley”.

Aside from the Motorola name slapped on current and future devices, the Droid franchise isn’t going anywhere. But perhaps the most paramount change for both Moto and Lenovo will be in stature. Separately, they couldn’t hope to challenge the leading global smartphone vendors. Together, they’re already in third place worldwide, and the sky is the limit for their perspectives.

All things considered, doesn’t it feel like Lenovo made a phenomenal deal purchasing the makers of the Nexus 6 and Droid Turbo in exchange for a measly $2.91 billion?
